“Just a…” – The Subtle Way We Limit Ourselves

I think almost everyone I know has a few phrases that, when they hear them, drive them crazy. Granted, some of these might be harmless, but more often than not, some phrases get under our skin. The other day, I was talking with a friend, and she used one of those phrases that irritated me—not in a good way. She said, “Just a,” followed by her job title. Technically, there was nothing wrong with what she said. However, the way she phrased it—the way so many people do—carried a self-deprecating undertone.

In my experience, whenever someone uses the phrase “Just a,” it’s rarely followed by a positive, confident statement. You don’t hear people saying, “I’m Just a great person” or “I’m Just an awesome human being.” Instead, it’s almost always said in a way that diminishes their role. For example, if you ask someone what they do, they might reply, “I’m Just a [job title].” It’s a subtle expression of reluctance, not quite embarrassment, but certainly not pride.

How you talk about yourself profoundly shapes your self-perception. In my opinion, the phrase “Just a” often reflects a hidden limiting belief. People may not be fully satisfied with what they do or with a certain quality about themselves, and that dissatisfaction surfaces in their language. To me, “Just a” signals a belief that quietly undermines one’s potential.

Here’s the truth: whatever you’re describing with “Just a” is often just a temporary phase in the grand scheme of your life. If it’s a job title, it doesn’t define who you are as a person; it simply represents what you’re doing at the moment. Unfortunately, many of us fall into the trap of defining ourselves by our work—but we are so much more than our job titles.

We are all more than whatever we’re downplaying with “Just a.” It’s essential to recognize that the words we use to describe ourselves can shape our reality. Words carry power, and we can direct that power in ways that either uplift us or hold us back. And let’s be clear—when we use language that limits us, we’re not just holding ourselves back; we’re hurting ourselves in ways we may not even realize.

So, the next time you catch yourself saying ‘Just a’ pause and reconsider. What if, instead, you spoke with confidence and ownership of who you are and what you do? Your words have the power to shape your reality, so choose them wisely. Start replacing ‘Just a’ with something that truly reflects your worth. Because you’re not ‘just’ anything—you’re much more than that. Embrace it, own it, and watch how your world changes.

Just a," you say, as if it’s small,
A quiet whisper, a shrinking call.
Dimming your light, though it burns so bright,
With words that fade your own true might.

You are not "just" a fleeting role,
But a spirit, a heart, a glowing soul.
The work you do, it does not define,
The depth of you, the light, the shine.

So speak with pride, let your words grow,
You are much more than you even know.

Thank-filled Me Game

It’s hard to believe that summer has passed, and fall is already knocking at the door, with Thanksgiving just around the corner. The school routine has settled in by now, and the first quarter is nearly complete. My heart especially goes out to the parents of students who struggle with reading, writing, and math. The end of the first quarter can be a particularly challenging time.

When rainy days leave your child bored this fall, try an engaging activity called the Thank-filled Me Game. This game aims to help your child reflect on and express gratitude for different parts of their body, mind, and spirit.

Here’s how to play:

  1. Find a large piece of paper around the house (wrapping paper works well).
  2. Have your child lie down on the paper and trace an outline of their body.
  3. On the blank side of the paper, guide your child in identifying something they are thankful for in each part of their body. For example, they might say, "I am grateful for my left hand because I use it to write." Write their responses on the paper.
  4. Once you’ve completed all the parts of the body, go over the list with them and remind them how fortunate they are to have each part and ability.

Remember, the Thank-filled Me Game is meant to be fun and educational, not bound by strict rules. Children who struggle with writing may need a scribe or might prefer to draw their answers. Keep the game fluid, using dialogue to help identify their perspectives and insights. Some children, especially those with shorter attention spans, may need breaks along the way—that’s perfectly okay. The game is adaptable to each child’s needs, so feel free to make it your own.

While the main objective is to cultivate thankfulness, the true mission of the game is to build stronger relationships and enhance well-being. As you engage in this activity, you may uncover new insights into how your child views themselves. You might even discover barriers to their writing that you hadn’t previously considered.

This game beautifully aligns with the IMPACT Success Blueprint:

  1. Inclusion: There are no wrong answers. The game is all about your child’s unique knowledge and feelings.
  2. Motivation and Perseverance: Motivation is an internal drive. To keep your child engaged, encourage them with phrases like, “Just one more body part!”
  3. Adaptability: The game can be easily adapted to suit the materials you have on hand and your child’s attention span and tolerance.
  4. Confidence: Self-awareness is vital to building confidence. This game helps your child reflect on their strengths and abilities.
  5. Transcendence: Life is a journey, and this game is a small but meaningful part.

In conclusion, use the Thank-filled Me Game to nurture your child's mind, body, and spirit. This will strengthen your bond with them and improve their overall well-being.

Embrace Our Humanness in Nature

When summer opens, I see how fast it matures and fear it will be short; but after the heats of July and August, I am reconciled, like one who has had his swing, to the cool of autumn.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’ve studied and taught many periods of literature, such as ancient Greek mythology and British Romanticism. One of my favorites is American Transcendentalism. The production of such work lasted less than 35 years, but the words from essayists such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, have endured. Their central belief is in the inherent goodness of people and nature.

Autumn captures the heart of transcendentalism.

Trees stand out in brilliant yellows, oranges, reds. Their falling leaves pile up around us, making it hard not to notice they are here. Our meals turn from watermelon salads and hot dogs to stew pots full of root vegetables mellowing with browned beef. Roasted golden turkeys are served with butternut squash. We collect store-bought products and donate them to charities. Not-for-profit groups who serve those who need help all year round, amp up dinners and collection points to share the bounty of autumn with others. We help make those meals and some of us help serve them.

We put our lawn-cutting equipment and swimming pool gear away. We spend more time raking up the leaves, inhaling the crisper weather, and admiring the Northern Lights that made themselves available to a more southern part of our northern geography. How can we not wonder about our placement on Earth as one small human when we see stars, moon, and brilliant jewel tones splashed across our night skies?

Who are we, really?

We are a part of the abundance of this season. As we inhale the aromas of fall, taste the rich flavors in our meals, and embrace the needs of others by donating our time and materials to others who need it more, we celebrate what it means to be human. We celebrate our connection to the trees, honor the animals and vegetables who bring a bounty to our tables, and embrace each other in thankfulness.

A LIFE OF SERVICE | Carmella Banks

Autumn Abundance

Autumn, my favorite season. It is a magnificent picture of vibrant hues, bountiful harvests, and the warmth of nature’s transition.

Autumn is a celebration of the fullness of life, the trees become adorned with fiery red, gold, and amber leaves, and the earth offers up its final bounty before the cold months ahead. Pumpkins, apples, squash, and corn is plentiful, it symbolizes nourishment and abundance. Autumn Abundance represents a moment of gratitude and fulfillment all wrapped up in a cozy embrace of the season.

I am dedicated to living a life of service, giving back, and helping others. If you compare living a life of service and autumn abundance, you can easily find similarities. There is a richness and fulfillment that comes with dedicating oneself to the service of others. Much like nature, you are sowing seeds when you share acts of kindness, leadership, and support which can eventually yield a bountiful harvest of positive impact, develop or improve relationships, and bring forth personal growth.

As in the Autumn season, this phase of life symbolizes maturity and a deep sense of satisfaction from a long commitment to service.

"Abundance does not refer to just material wealth but to intangible rewards like wisdom, gratitude, love, and the sense of purpose gained from helping others."

In a life that is dedicated to service, the fruits of one’s labor may not be seen immediately, but like a harvest in autumn, it will come in time. Autumn is a time of reflection, a season when people pause to be thankful for the year's blessings. One can take stock of all the differences you have made in the world or someone’s life.

As the seasons change, so do the rhythms of giving and receiving. Autumn reminds us that service is part of a cycle, what we give often comes back to us in unexpected ways.

Just as autumn is a season of transition, service leads to personal transformation. It builds resilience, adaptability, and a deeper connection to the community. A life of service is about nurturing others, empowering them, and ensuring that they thrive. It’s about creating abundance not only for oneself but for everyone involved.

A season of fulfillment after years of giving, where the rewards of compassion, care, and leadership are felt most deeply is autumn abundance. Like the rich bright colors in the autumn season, it celebrates the richness that comes from a life lived for others.

Embracing Fall Abundance: Cultivating Generosity by First Cultivating It Within

As the air turns crisp and the leaves transform into a vibrant tapestry of golds, reds, and oranges, we are reminded of the season of abundance. Fall is nature’s way of showing us the beauty of bountifulness—trees heavy with fruit, fields ready for harvest, and the sense of gratitude that permeates the season. But how often do we reflect this abundance in our own lives, especially towards ourselves?

The key to embracing this season fully lies in a simple but profound concept: before you can willingly and generously give to others, you must first cultivate abundance within yourself. This isn’t about material wealth; it’s about filling your cup emotionally, spiritually, and mentally so that you have something to offer without resentment or reluctance.

Owning Your Abundance

Stephen Covey, in his classic 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, when reflecting on his 3-year-old, not wanting to share her new toys with her friends at her party, “Perhaps my daughter needed the experience of possessing the things before she could give them. (In fact, unless I possess something, can I ever really give it?) She needed me as her father to have a higher level of emotional maturity to give her that experience.” True abundance begins with self-ownership. It means recognizing what you have and, just as importantly, what you need. This could be time, energy, self-compassion, or a deeper connection with your own values and desires. Owning your abundance means embracing all aspects of yourself—the strengths, the weaknesses, the dreams, and the fears. When you claim these parts of you, you become whole, and from that wholeness, true generosity can flourish.

Generosity from Abundance, Not Obligation

Once you have cultivated abundance within, giving to others becomes an act of joy rather than obligation. Sharing is no longer a transaction or a depletion of your resources; it’s an extension of your fullness. You can lend a listening ear, offer advice, or even extend a helping hand without feeling drained because you are coming from a place of overflow, not scarcity.

Living Abundantly This Fall

This fall, as you savor the season’s abundance, remember that your inner harvest is just as important. Nurture yourself first and watch as your capacity to give grows naturally. When you are abundant with yourself, your generosity to others will flow effortlessly, making the world around you as rich and vibrant as the season itself. By owning your abundance, you not only enrich your own life but also inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of generosity that can transform the world one kind act at a time.

Action Item: Where are you grudgingly giving? What steps do you need to take to “own” it before you can willingly share it?

Why Fall is the Perfect Time to Grow Your Real Estate Empire

Pumpkin spice lattes, cozy sweaters, and… adding to your real estate portfolio? That’s right! Fall isn’t just for hayrides and football games—it’s also the best season to scoop up investment properties or sell the ones you already have to finance even better properties. If you’re a newer investor with a couple of properties under your belt, now’s your chance to get ahead of the game and grow your real estate empire. Here’s why fall is prime time to hunt for deals...

1. Sellers are Ready to Make a Deal

By the time fall rolls around, sellers who couldn’t move their properties during the hot summer months are ready to negotiate. They’re eager to close before winter sets in, and you could snag a property at a price that makes your pumpkin-flavored heart skip a beat!

2. Fewer Bidding Wars = More Wins for You

Remember those crazy bidding wars in summer? Well, they’ve cooled down like the weather. Fall buyers are fewer, so you’ll have way less competition. No more sweating through multiple offers—this is your chance to swoop in and claim a great property without the stress of outbidding 20 other people.

3. Fall = Deals, Deals, Deals!

After summer’s frenzy, prices tend to dip a bit as demand fades. With sellers eager to get a deal done before the holidays, you can often negotiate a lower price or better terms. It’s like finding that perfectly priced Halloween candy stash—sweet and satisfying.

4. Get Those Sweet Year-End Tax Breaks

Who doesn’t love a good tax deduction? Snagging an investment property before the year ends can give you some juicy tax advantages. From mortgage interest to property taxes, you’ll have plenty of write-offs to soften the blow when tax season rolls around. This is real estate magic in action!

5. Test the Property Under Real-World Conditions

Fall gives you a sneak peek at how a property handles real-world challenges—like chilly weather, rainstorms, and possible maintenance issues. Does that cute little house have drafty windows? How’s the roof holding up? Fall lets you spot potential problems early, so you can plan repairs and avoid any scary surprises later.

Fall is an exciting time for real estate investing. Whether you’re buying with fewer competitors in the market or selling with the help of fall's natural charm, this season offers plenty of advantages. So, whether you're sipping a PSL and hunting for deals or staging your home with cozy touches, fall might just be the season to make your real estate dreams come true!

Fall’s Hidden Wisdom: Deepening Roots for Lasting Impact

Have you ever heard the old adage: "Fall is for planting"?

Not just a catchy saying, it's based on real science.

At this time of year, the decreasing day length and warm daytime temperatures combined with cooler nights and consistently warm soil -- all signal the tree to spend less energy on creating leaves and to focus instead on sending roots deeper into the soil.

And in the Fall season, the tree has less heat, drought, weeds, insects, and plant diseases to contend with, creating a perfect opportunity to build a healthy foundation for future growth.

We humans can also take a cue from this maxim, "Fall is for planting." Dear reader, if you're in your middle years of life (however you choose to define that), you are in a special place right now.

Think about it...

You've already passed some of life's most demanding phases: completing your own education; child rearing; getting established in your career.

You've gotten smarter about simplifying your life. You've figured out what you want... and what you don't. You've carved away the relationships, activities, and objects that just didn't work for you.

Now you can focus your energy, wisdom, and experience to set down your roots ever deeper and create a legacy of impact.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

**Establish Deep Connections** Autumn is the season to strengthen your connections with loved ones and communities. Here's a tip that nobody talks about: develop friendships across all age ranges. You'll gain from the wisdom of your elders, and your horizons will expand when you spend time with younger folks (a big bonus - they don't talk about aches and pains, thank heavens!). By fostering deep and meaningful relationships, you can create a support system that sustains you and future generations.

**Nurture Personal Growth** Fall offers a chance for personal introspection and growth, akin to trees shedding their leaves to prepare for the next season. Read a book, listen to a great podcast, learn a language, or take a cooking class... just do something new to learn and grow. Embracing change and letting go of the past enables you to evolve and flourish, with benefits that will resonate for years to come.

**Cultivate Lasting Impact** By sharing the principles, values, and traditions that have guided your life, you can establish a legacy that transcends generations. You can pour yourself into family members or into people in your greater community. You can give in small or large ways to support important work, research, or causes you care about. The deep roots you establish in these ways will create an enduring influence on those who come after you.

This autumn, take the time now to send down deep roots into your family, friends, and community. And remember to nurture your own sweet self while you're at it. As with the young tree that is planted with care this Fall season, the beauty and impact will last for generations to come.

PEACE OF MIND | Estella Blake

Autumn Abundance: Nurturing Mental Health and Wellness for Fall

As the air turns crisp and leaves begin to change, autumn brings a time for reflection and renewal. While many of us enjoy the abundance this season offers—cozy sweaters, pumpkin-spiced treats, and harvest festivals—there’s also a need to focus on health and wellness, particularly mental well-being. With shorter days and the holidays approaching, fall is the perfect time to nurture both our physical and mental health.

  • Mental wellness is just as important as maintaining a healthy diet or regular exercise, especially as seasonal challenges arise.

One growing issue affecting mental health is identity theft, a crisis that is more common with the alarming number of data breaches. Major breaches from companies like Facebook, Equifax, and Marriott have exposed millions of personal records, increasing the likelihood of identity theft.

With the holidays approaching, online shopping surges, and so does identity theft activity. According to the Federal Trade Commission, resolving identity theft can take 100-200 hours and cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. The mental toll—anxiety, fear, loss of sleep, and financial stress—can be overwhelming.

Identity theft can range from minor annoyances like fraudulent credit card charges to more severe cases like stolen tax refunds, medical identity theft, or even criminal identity theft. The emotional toll of dealing with these violations can be debilitating, and protecting our mental health in these situations is crucial.

While we can’t fully prevent identity theft, having a plan in place to minimize financial loss and restore your identity and reputation is essential. Being prepared with the right resources can significantly reduce the anxiety and fear associated with identity theft. This includes using protection services that offer real-time alerts, legal support, and comprehensive restoration services.

Many people think of credit card fraud when they hear about identity theft, but there are several other forms that can wreak havoc, including:

  • Medical Identity Theft
  • Tax Identity Theft
  • Child Identity Theft
  • Criminal Identity Theft
  • Social Security Fraud

To ensure peace of mind, taking proactive steps is crucial. Having a resource in place to quickly resolve identity theft issues will save you time, money, and stress. As the days grow shorter and the holiday season draws near, take care of your mental well-being by preparing for life’s unexpected challenges.

In this season of abundance, protect your peace of mind and mental wellness by putting the right safeguards in place. After all, there’s nothing more valuable than feeling secure and empowered in both body and mind.

Elevate Your Home's Appeal This Autumn

As the leaves begin to turn and the air grows crisp, autumn presents an excellent opportunity for homeowners looking to sell. This season’s decor trends not only enhance your living space but also make your property more appealing to potential buyers. Here’s how you can embrace cozy interiors, warm color palettes, and simple DIY decoration ideas to elevate your home’s appeal this fall—without losing your gourd!

Consider using warm color palettes to attract buyers. This autumn, rich colors like deep burgundies, burnt oranges, and golden yellows are so in vogue. These hues can create an inviting atmosphere that resonates with buyers seeking comfort in their future homes. After all, nothing says “buy me” like a warm & cozy ambiance, so don’t forget to bake some candles and burn some cookies. Or should that be the other way around?

A cozy home is a welcoming home, especially during the fall. This season, focus on creating inviting interiors that encourage potential buyers to envision themselves living there. Use plush textiles—think chunky knit throws and oversized cushions—to make your space feel snug and inviting. It’s like giving your living room a warm hug… without the awkwardness.

Rearranging furniture to promote conversation and warmth is key. A circular seating arrangement around a coffee table can make a living room feel more intimate—perfect for hosting those “I swear I’m not just here for the drinks” gatherings.

Highlighting seasonal florals, like sunflowers or dried eucalyptus, in simple vases can add a touch of life to the space. This not only beautifies the home but also connects potential buyers with the beauty of autumn—because who wouldn’t want a home that smells like a pumpkin spice latte? Mmmmmm, smells like home.

For homeowners looking to add their unique flair, simple DIY decorations can enhance appeal and show creativity. Here are a few ideas that can also be easily removed:

1. **Mason Jar Lanterns**: Fill mason jars with fairy lights and autumn leaves for a charming display that can illuminate your space during showings. Just don’t be surprised if they steal the spotlight!

2. **Pumpkin Vases**: Hollow out small pumpkins to use as vases for fresh flowers or candles. They make delightful centerpieces, and they’re one way to bring “gourd-geous” decor into your home!

3. **DIY Wreaths**: Craft a fall wreath using grapevine, dried flowers, and colorful leaves to hang on your front door, offering an inviting first impression. Just remember: it’s a wreath, not a Halloween scarecrow—keep it classy!

As a Realtor, I’ve seen firsthand how autumn decor can enhance a home’s appeal and create an inviting atmosphere for potential buyers. By incorporating warm color palettes, cozy textiles, and natural elements, you can showcase your home in its best light this fall. A few thoughtful DIY touches can also make a significant difference—because nothing says “welcome” like a home that feels like a piece of warm pumpkin pie!

So, embrace the season and transform your home into a cozy haven that stands out in today’s market. With these simple changes, your home will not only reflect the beauty of autumn but also attract buyers eager to settle in for the cozy months ahead. If you’re considering buying or selling a home this season, be sure to enlist the help of a professional Realtor to ensure that your experience is full of all treats, and no tricks!

Fantastic Fall Ways to Spruce Up Your Diabetes Management

As the leaves turn to shades of gold and pumpkin spice wafts through the air, autumn invites us to revel in a season of abundance! It’s a time to cozy up, sip warm drinks, and savor delicious, seasonal treats—all while managing your diabetes with a sprinkle of fun.

Here are some fun ways to dance through autumn and keep your blood sugar in check!

1. Harvest Seasonal Produce
Autumn is a cornucopia of colorful fruits and veggies just waiting to be explored! Picture yourself strolling through a farmer’s market, eyes wide at the sight of crisp apples, vibrant pumpkins and colorful winter squashes. These treasures are not just tasty; they’re packed with fiber and antioxidants to help keep your blood sugar levels stable. Get creative in the kitchen! Whip up a hearty pumpkin soup or bake spiced apples for a sweet treat that won’t break the bank on sugar.

2. Stay Active with Fall Adventures
As the temperatures drop, it’s the perfect time to step outside and frolic in the crisp air! Why not grab a friend or family member for a nature walk to admire the stunning foliage? Try leaf-peeping hikes or join in on local fall festivals, where you can get your groove on while enjoying seasonal activities like apple picking or hayrides. Every step you take is a step toward better health—and a delightful way to soak up the beauty of the season!

3. Monitor Your Blood Sugar with Style
As the holiday treats start rolling in, keeping an eye on your blood sugar is key! Think of it as your personal treasure hunt. Use a journal to jot down your levels, especially after trying new autumn recipes. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not give a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) a whirl? It’s like having a little health buddy that whispers sweet nothings about your glucose levels in real-time!

4. Plan for Halloween Treats
Halloween is a delightful mix of costumes and candy, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out! Get crafty with healthier treats like dark chocolate-dipped fruit or spooky pumpkin-spice energy bites. And instead of focusing solely on sweets, plan fun activities like pumpkin carving or a new craft project to keep the sugary vibes at bay. After all, who says Halloween can’t be a spooktacular time for everyone?

5. Stay Hydrated in Style
With the cooler weather, it’s easy to forget to hydrate, but hydration can be an adventure too! Think of fun, warm beverages—imagine curling up with a mug of herbal tea, infused with seasonal flavors like cinnamon or ginger. Add slices of juicy oranges or zesty cranberries for a festive twist. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, and your body will thank you!

6. Prioritize Sleep and Stress Management
As the days grow shorter, it’s the perfect time to cozy up and indulge in self-care. Create a cherished bedtime routine—perhaps a warm bath with a sprinkle of lavender or a chapter from your favorite fall-themed book. Mindfulness practices like yoga can also be a delightful way to unwind, leaving you feeling refreshed and ready to embrace the autumn adventure ahead.

This autumn, let’s celebrate the season of abundance and savor every delightful moment! By adding a touch of creativity and consistency to your diabetes management, you can fully enjoy the flavors, festivities, and joy that fall brings. Here’s to a fun and vibrant season, filled with warmth, health, and happiness!
